Spain registers 9,5% more treatments of In Vitro Fertilization, according to the latest report presented by the Spanish Fertility Society.
Data collected in the 2015 National Activity Register-SEF Register, prepared by the Spanish Fertility Society in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, places Spain at the forefront of Europe in assisted reproduction treatments, registering 9,5% more In Vitro Fertilization treatments than in 2014, the first year in which the results of all national clinics were offered.
According to the conclusions presented in the report, a total of 166.712 reproductive cycles were performed in Spain in 2015: 127.809 In Vitro Fertilization cycles and 38.903 cycles of Intrauterine insemination, with a decrease in artificial inseminations observed compared to the previous year's report.
In In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) treatments, patients undergo an ovarian stimulation phase through the administration of hormonal medications. Subsequently, the oocytes are retrieved in the operating room and fertilized by sperm in the laboratory. This process yields embryos which, after being cultured in the laboratory, are transferred to the uterus via a catheter.
In artificial insemination, semen, previously processed and concentrated in a laboratory, is deposited into the woman's uterus. This increases the pregnancy rate because 100% of the sperm reach the uterine cavity, avoiding cervical and vaginal factors that can affect fertility.
These figures place Spain at the forefront of Europe in the performance of assisted reproduction treatments and in third place worldwide, only behind Japan and the United States.
According to the data analyzed in the report, in 2015 the average age of Spanish women undergoing fertility treatments was between 35 and 39 years old. Furthermore, the number of foreign women undergoing assisted reproductive treatment in Spain has also increased, now representing 7,24% of the total.
To analyze the data for the year 2015, the Spanish Fertility Society has collected data from the 287 Spanish assisted reproduction centers.
